Amolen 3D Filament Review: A Creator’s Dream or Just Another Spool?

As a content creator with a soft spot for 3D printing, I’ve been eager to dive into Amolen’s lineup of filaments, a brand that’s been making waves for its innovative and eco-friendly approach. Known for offering a variety of PLA, TPU, and PETG filaments – including unique options like silk, multicolor, and glow-in-the-dark – Amolen promises high-quality materials designed to bring creative visions to life. I tested their PLA Silk Filament and Multicolor Gradient PLA to see if they truly deliver for hobbyists and artists alike. Here’s my take.

First Look and Feel

Amolen’s website immediately highlights their commitment to quality and sustainability, with filaments crafted in Los Angeles using U.S.-sourced materials. The packaging is straightforward and sturdy, ensuring the filament arrives tangle-free – a small but crucial detail for any 3D printing enthusiast. Each spool comes with a resealable bag, which I appreciated for keeping moisture at bay. The silk filament shimmered with a glossy finish right out of the box, while the multicolor gradient promised a mesmerizing shift of hues mid-print.

Printing Experience

I ran both filaments through my trusty Ender 3 at the recommended settings (190-220°C for the nozzle, 50-60°C for the bed). The Silk PLA printed like a dream – smooth extrusion, no clogging, and a stunning glossy finish that made my test models (a vase and a figurine) look almost professionally polished. The layer adhesion was spot-on, and the prints had a luxurious sheen that’s hard to achieve with standard PLA.

The Multicolor Gradient PLA was the real showstopper. Watching the colors transition from deep blue to vibrant purple mid-print was oddly satisfying. It required a bit more tweaking to avoid stringing – I dialed back the retraction slightly – but once calibrated, the results were eye-catching. I printed a small jewelry box, and the gradient effect gave it a bespoke, artistic flair that’s perfect for gifting or selling.

Strengths

  • Variety: From matte to metal to glow-in-the-dark, Amolen’s range is a playground for creative experimentation.

  • Quality: Consistent diameter (1.75mm ± 0.03mm) and minimal warping made for reliable prints.

  • Eco-Conscious: Their focus on sustainable materials feels good for the planet and the conscience.

  • Aesthetics: The silk and gradient options elevate basic prints into something special.

  •

Drawbacks

  • Price: At around $25-35 per 1kg spool, it’s pricier than basic PLA from competitors like Hatchbox or eSun. You’re paying for the specialty factor.

  • Color Accuracy: The website photos oversell the vibrancy a bit – my multicolor spool was slightly muted compared to the display images.

  • Learning Curve: Newbies might need some trial and error to nail the settings, especially with the gradient filament.

Verdict

Amolen isn’t just another filament brand – it’s a premium choice for creators who want to push boundaries beyond standard prints. The Silk PLA is a must-try for anyone aiming for sleek, professional-looking pieces, while the Multicolor Gradient adds a fun, artistic twist that’s hard to replicate. That said, the higher price tag and slight setup finesse required might not suit budget-conscious beginners.

Rating: 8/10
If you’re a 3D printing enthusiast with a flair for the unique and a willingness to invest in quality, Amolen’s filaments are a solid addition to your toolkit. I’m already eyeing their glow-in-the-dark option for my next project – because who doesn’t love a print that lights up the night? Have you tried Amolen? Let me know your thoughts!
