Our story

It all started with an idea. In September 2021, the team at Surfshark was investigating data privacy issues they could tackle. That's when we stumbled upon the data broker industry and its appalling lack of regulation. We decided to build a tool that would curb the unfair data collection practices of data brokers and empower people to leverage existing privacy laws. A product that would use technology to return control over personal data back to its rightful owners.

The product

Incogni is a personal data removal service. It automatically removes personal information related to you from public websites (such as people search engines) and private databases. It does so by regularly sending requests to data brokers on your behalf, because records tend to reappear once removed. Incogni will also ask data brokers to add your profile to their suppression lists, where available, to make sure your name is never listed again.

What is a data broker?

Data brokers are companies that scrape the internet for personal information. They aggregate, often analyze, and then sell this data to third parties such as private businesses, insurance companies, financial institutions, the government, and other data brokers.

What is a people search site?

People search sites are companies that collect data, compile it into personal profiles, and either sell or publish those profiles online. Users can look people up with as little starting information as a name and access troves of personal details such as addresses, contact information, employment history, religious and political beliefs, hobbies, interests, relatives and associates, and much more.

How do you know if a data broker or people search site has my personal information?

We use the information you provide us to regularly scan people search sites for your data. When a match is flagged, we have it taken down. Other data brokers keep private databases, however, so scans don't work there. Instead, we use information such as your region to identify any data broker that may even potentially hold your data and send them opt-out requests periodically.

How long does it take to remove my data from data broker databases?

How long data removal takes depends on the data broker. Some data brokers comply with removal requests within hours, others take weeks. You can check the expected removal time of each data broker through your dashboard.

How much does a subscription to Incogni cost?

The cost of an Incogni subscription depends on the plan you choose. A standard yearly individual plan costs €7.29 per month (€87.48 billed yearly). A standard monthly individual plan costs €14.48 per month. Our Unlimited plans are available as yearly subscriptions only.
